Creativity and New Media

Image
One way that new media has fostered creativity in my life has been through video games, and more specifically, NBA 2k. The NBA 2k series has been going on every year since late 90s/early 2000s. Throughout the years, NBA 2k has given creativity a platform in their game through their MyPlayer and Create A Player modes. With both of these modes, an individual can use their imagination to create their own NBA player from scratch, just the way they want to. Pictured below is a screenshot from one of the many players I created in the Create A Player mode in NBA 2k18. Through NBA 2k, I am able to customize and be creative with things like background (name, college, birthday, etc), height, weight, wingspan, hair, facial hair, body type, etc. The cool thing about this mode is that you can also customize the attributes your player has, making your player the type you want them to be. For example, if you want to create a player that will play as a shooter, you can max out all of the shooting attr

Creative

Throughout history, creativity has been fostered within individuals through many different means. It has been seen that some things foster creativity more than others. One of these things that greatly foster creativity is new media. Ever since new media began to emerge all those years ago, we have seen an age of amazing creativity, whether it be in music, education, technology, medicine, etc. Personally, I am a big fan of the creativity new media fostered in terms of the music world. New media has given us new and brilliant ways to hear and create music. In the article, 1+1-1=1 , by Sasha Frere-Jones, we are introduced to the idea of mashups. A mashup is a form (or even genre) of music where an individual takes two songs, musical performances (most of the times completely unrelated to each other) and somehow combine them into one song making both pieces work with each other in harmony. The fact that all music is much more accessible now makes it easier to create things like mashups whi

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

In the 21st century, we have seen such an influx of new and amazing technologies come into existence, from lightning fast internet all the way to the ability to call rides from your phone. One of the biggest innovations in the technological world has been the introduction and implementation of virtual reality and virtual worlds. The introduction of this new technology has impacted our society in many ways, whether it be in personal life, professional life, education, etc. One of the ways that virtual worlds have been able to model our reality has been through its implementation in our education. As history has progressed, humans have found new and effective methods of administering education, making life better for both students and instructors. One method that has been introduced was introducing virtual reality into the classroom. There are numerous reasons why this is an addition that will show to be very beneficial. One reason is that since virtual reality is a fairy new form of t

Blog About Twitter

There are many different ways that I have been able to participate in class discussions throughout my years at Baruch. Three of those ways have been through Blackboard discussion boards, in-class discussions, and most recently, Twitter discussions. Each way of discussion has its own unique qualities that sets it apart from each other. The Blackboard discussion board is a formal way of creating and adding to discussion with your professor as well as your fellow classmates. Blackboard's discussion board has the feature of having no character limit, which means you can post long discussions, ask long questions with long formulas, etc. I have seen the discussion boards on Blackboard be used for many things from creating groups, to students helping each other with homework questions. Twitter is a much more informal way of discussion. What I like about the Twitter discussions is how you can access everything being discussed with one simple hashtag (#3810NET2). The 280 character limit

Blog: Social Networking Sites

From the early 2000s, social media began to slowly rise into the social lives of humans and give us a taste of the possibilities social media could bring. In 2018, social media has transformed into a giant globe of connection that is universal in pretty much every aspect. Social media sites (like MySpace back in the early 2000s) began as fun past times for individuals, but it soon turned into a multimedia giant that people use everyday in various ways. This can include for fun, education, income, news, etc. The four social media sites that I have been able to get a good impression of are Facebook, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Facebook:  Facebook took what MySpace started, and took it to a whole new level. I like to call Facebook the Disney of social media since they own an enormous amount of umbrella companies, and they are pretty much the biggest giant in social media with over 2 billion monthly users. I have had Facebook the longest (since middle school) which helped me see how

Blog Social Networking

Social networking has, over the past few years, become a dominating aspect in our everyday lives. It is very rare today to find an individual who doesn't have at least one form of a social networking account. This emergence of social networking has numerous benefits to all people and made it so that the world is more connected than it ever was. A post that someone in the United States shares of Facebook can be seen (and liked) by someone all the way in India. These sites can help people who are shy or uncomfortable in public find new ways to meet people and make friends. It is a way to stay connected with friends far away. Social networking can even help individuals find relationships. However, social networking doesn't only affect the social aspect of an individuals life. Another benefit social networking sites have is that it can also aid in corporate life and ones career path.      Gone are the days when someone needed to look through the daily newspaper to find the jo

Blog vs. Wiki

Technology today has led us into an era of information overflow. By this I mean that there are more and more ways to gain information, insight, news, etc. (Instead of having to watch the news, or read a textbook). Two things that play a big role in this era of technology are blogs and wikis. Both of these, with their own unique characteristics, help individuals put out content, as well as receive content quickly and efficiently. One main thing many people associate with blogs is the personal touch many blogs have. An individual who is interested in something like fashion could design their own unique blog to showcase their love for fashion to the whole world. A wiki is known for its collaborative aspect as anyone can add information or edit information on any specific wiki.      Wikis and blogs both are examples of how important human (and technological) convergence are important in today's tech-filled society. When you have a large number of individuals coming together over
